The Power of the Internet

The assumptions of the press are what make for the most thrilling of news stories. The effects of one person assuming something is shown in the flux in visitors to this particular blog. It is the same reason why gossip celebrity magazines and blogs are so popular. If someone makes accusations, regardless of their validity, others are interested in knowing the information. Ethically, this example of accusing an innocent man of the Virginia Tech shootings proves the power of the internet and people’s opinions. This goes back to people being sued over web postings on blogs, citing that it ruined their image or prestige in the eye of the public.

Of course this presents an issue for posting personal information on the internet. Facebook and MySpace are both classic examples of this. Posting pictures of oneself subjects them to being ridiculed for behavior that may or may not seem responsible. I have heard of companies and employers using Facebook & MySpace as screening tools for potential candidates. In fact, my sophomore year several RA’s were fired from Ohio University for posting pictures of underage drinking on campus. Is this an invasion of privacy? Or, just plain ignorant behavior on their part?
